Ozone for Sanitation

Ozone has been used since the turn of the century by the city of Paris (France) for the treatment of their drinking water. It is one of the strongest oxidizers know to man.  By no means is the idea of water purification with ozone a new thought. Ozone works through oxidation, meaning that the ozone burns through the outer cell wall of the organism killing it. It also works to burn-off the organic contaminates that are brought into the water during normal use. The organic wastes range from Body oils to cosmetics. The ozone does a very good job of removing these contaminates from the water. It also is good with killing the bacterial and viral contaminates the human body leaves in the water.

Ozone, does have it's draw backs. In too high of concentrations it will attack rubbers and plastics. It does not leave a residual (only works when it is on) and works only on what it comes in contact with (where the ozone is introduced into the water). This, in short, means that we need to help the ozone with some other form of sanitation that will stay in the water when the spa is off and reach throughout the entire plumbing system.

Most spas with ozone also have the means of an automatic filtration cycle, which the ozone is connected to. This means that when you set the automatic filtration times you also set the run time for the ozone. The amount of run time is determined by how much the hot tub is being used. On average a hot tub is used 3-4 times a week by two reasonably clean adults. With this use, the filtration times should be set to run between 8-10 hours a day. On the other hand if the hot tub is used every day by the same two adults the times should be set for 18-24 hours per day.

It is always better to set the times to a higher setting than what you think is needed, then start to set the times back 1-2 hours a day, on a weekly basis. It's better to stay ahead of the game than to play catch-up.

With this in mind a good scenario would be to run the spa 24 hours a day when you first get the hot tub, then, if the water quality is still acceptable after a week of use, set the run times back to 20 hours a day and allow that to work for the following week. If your water is still acceptable after an additional week of use, then continue to set back the times back 2-4 hours per day, once per week, until you find the point where the water is not inviting to use.

If your water quality goes south on you, then start the recovery process by setting the run times up to a continuous, 24 hour per day  cycle, to help in the recovery process. You would also check the other important factors involved in water quality. i.e.: Clean the filter, check water balance and the additional sanitizer level, whether it be chlorine, bromine or any other type of sanitizer.
